4 things to consider before a career change?

28.05.2020

In today’s world, especially during the recent hard times when we’ve all had too much spare time on our hands to think, it is not uncommon to re-evaluate your chosen career path and consider a change. Five to seven career changes in a lifetime is the new average for Australian workers who are willing to update their qualifications and switch careers.

However, before jumping in head first; there are some things to take into consideration to ensure you are making the right decision. Here are Advanced Groups top 4 things to consider before changing jobs.

Evaluate your reasoning?

Give yourself time to properly work out your reasons for considering a career change. Make a list of what you dislike and like about your current role and decide if the reason for the dislikes are based on the job or the company itself and its culture? Maybe it’s not a career change you need to look at but more simply a similar role within a new company.

Establish what you are looking for?

Cast your mind back to when you were happy in a role or a particular job? Consider your interests and what’s important to you in terms of a role and the company? Do you have a passion that you could turn into your dream job? During this stage of the process it might take a bit of time and energy experimenting to find what ‘floats your boat’ – but it will be worth it in the end!

Stay focused on the task

A career change is high on the list under moving house, getting married and having a baby in terms of being challenging, difficult and sometimes stressful.  You will need to spend a lot of time on searching for the right position. It is therefore important to be selective in your search and stay focused on your reasons to keep you motivated during the whole process from start to finish. Also remember it shouldn’t be allowed to take over your life completely, as this is likely to cause you further stress.

Take advantage of your networks

This doesn’t mean bombarding all your contacts on social media or connecting with strangers on Linkedin, it’s about getting to know people within your network and building long-lasting relationships. You need to work on identifying and getting to know those who can help you along your way.

If you don’t feel like you’re in a job you love anymore and you dread going to work every day. Or you feel like you’re staring at the clock all day just watching the minutes tick by? Then maybe it is time for a career change.
